Carolyn Hoppe FLING
The Niles books by
Carolyn Fling are not, as far as I know, published books which you could find
in a library. I believe Carolyn is the granddaughter, or possibly
great-granddaughter of Louisa Niles, and my understanding is that about 30
years ago, letters that were written by both Adinijah and Frank Niles when they
were in the military during the time of the Civil War were found in somebody's
attic. Carolyn, who also had done some research on the Niles family, and also
had some of Louisa's poetry, letters and journal(s), typed up copies the Civil
War letters, her genealogy records, and Louisa's personal poetry, etc. She then
had copies made of the typewritten pages, as well as some old family photos she
had, and had them bound. The "book" covers were a heavy card stock,
and they were bound with plastic spiral binding
... probably done at a
small print shop.
It is my understanding
that she provided copies of these books to all of Frank and Edna's children who
were still living at that time...and probably to other people I do not know. My
mother, as one of Frank and Edna's daughters, had a set of those books. I think
my older half-brother may have them. I thought the books were quite
interesting, especially the letters written by Frank and Adinijah, and asked my
mother why Carolyn didn't just go ahead and have them published. At that time,
she told me that Carolyn felt they were too personal...there was a lot of
family stuff in Frank's letters, and I don't recall much about Adinijah's, but
I think there was more family stuff in his letters. I do recall that he seemed
to be forever trying to settle disputes between his wife and his mother. I also
know that Frontier Magazine published an article about Frank in one of their
magazines years ago, although I don't know who provided them with copies of the
letters. That the article has a lot of fictional information that the editor or
writer apparently thought might spice up the story a little. Such as...Frank's
consternation when Adinijah enlisted in the Confederate Army, and was killed by
Union fire when General Grant and his troops entered Richmond, Virginia. That
is pure nonsense. Adinijah was part of a Pennsylvania regiment, and he was
killed on September 19, 1864 during the 3rd Battle of Winchester. He was also,
at one time, taken prisoner by Confederates and confined in Libby Prison for a
time, then released as part of a prisoner exchange. As far as I know, he is
probably buried somewhere in Virginia, probably with his comrades who died the
same day as he, but if I remember correctly, his names and dates are on the
Niles family monument in Cory Grove Cemetery in Sac City, Iowa.
