1st. Lt Harold Mulholland pulled the only B24 out of a tail spin with 8 - 1000 pound bombs and full tanks of gas on D-day (Dec 26, 1943). Only to die along with his crew, in a bullet riddled B24 after a successful lead bomber mission on an air strip on Kendari. The plane crashed on Wowoni Island in an attempt to return home. The plane was told to ditch in the ocean as a submarine was waiting to pick them up. MY COMMENTS: Mulhollen was probably aware that water landing for B24 were not good. Bomb bay doors were known to fail and flood the plane. The average success of survival was 2 in 10 for a water landing. Mulhollens plane was on its maid bombing run. It was still bright aluminum, lacking the traditional paint. To top it off, it was the lead plane in the bombing run

8 Janury 1944
The “Grim Reaper” continued his bloody harvest, striking down another veteran crew one day after Frank Hastings disappearance. This time the victim was 1/Lt. Harold S. Mulhollen, pilot extraordinaire who had effect the miraculous recovery of a flat spinning B-24 off Cape Gloucester. Mulhollen and his crew were flying their thirtieth and last mission as part of an eighteen plane strike on Kendari.
Mechanical problems plagued the mission before it ever departed Australia. 530th flight leader Joe Vick discovered his #4 supercharger regulator wouldn’t function properly during the engine run-ups. He aborted the mission. Not wanting to break radio silence, Vik ordered his radio operator. T/Sgt. Don Meyer, to go over to Mulhollen’s plane and tell him to take over as flight leader. This was a logical choice for Hal Mulhollen was the most experienced aircraft commander flying with the 530th that day.He readily accepted these duties and flew the lead position.
Another Fenton based plane was taken off the flight schedule before the mission departed. Later three others returned with excessive fuel consumption problems. This particular dilemma reflects the inexperience of the new crews learning to adjust their flying to the stringent demands of the SWAP.
As the remaining thirteen planes approached Kendari from the south, crews spotted fighters climbing toward them still twenty-five miles short of their objective. Some thirteen Zekes from the 202nd Kokutai heavily engaged the intruders before they could begin their bomb runs. Nevertheless, the Americans forged ahead. Seven Liberators dropped on the No. 1 Barracks area, while six others attacked the dispersal areas at the end of the runway. Bombing results were poor, demonstrating the crews’ primary concern with the incoming fighters.
The vicious fight lasted thirty-five minutes before the fighters finally withdrew. The Americans claimed eleven confirmed kills for the loss of one of their own #42-73115, flown by Hal Mulhollen, had taken the brunt of an early attack just as bombardier 1/Lt. Keith K. Ramsdell dropped his load on the barracks. Immediately following the release, his #4 engine was hit and began streaming smoke. It marked them as a cripple which focused further fighter attacks upon the damaged Liberator. Mulhollen’s top turret and tail gunners were able to flame a Zeke as it bored in form 6:00 high position. Unfortunately, they failed to prevent the fighter from damaging the rear fuselage and #3 engine. It too lost power and gushed heavy smoke. The situation was now deteriorating fast. Mulhollen and his co-pilot, 2/Lt. Russell P. Flemming, cut the power back on the left wing to compensate for the dead right engines and prayed they wouldn’t fall off into deadly flat spin. This action worked well enough to stay in formation which allowed Col. Miller’s lead flight to protect them. The Group CO maintained direct radio contact with Mulhollen throughout the crisis, reassuring him a submarine had been contacted to pick them up once they ditched. Mulhollen and Flemming fought the sluggish controls, while cautiously applying more power as #115 approached Wononi Island. Given the limited control still available to the crew, this island obstacle could not be avoided. It proved to be too much for damaged bomber, the extra power induced an unrecoverable flat spin. Quiet, Hal Mulhollen and his crew died on a mountainous hillside at 19:30 hrs. Darwin time.
Just before impact, Mulhollen pleaded “please somebody help me” over the command radio set. The message was clearly received by his fellow raiders and through a remarkable set of circumstances, by Don Meyer back at distant Fenton, Joe Vick’s radio operator had gone to the A.A.C.S communications shack to kill some time by monitoring the mission frequencies when he heard the hauntingly sad call. Mayer immediately identified the voice as being his good friend and frequent pilot, Hal Mulhollen. Here was a man of few words and little emotion during times of crisis, to make such a call meant he was in serious trouble. The silence which followed the singular transmission greatly disturbed Mayer. He left the shack saddened to know his friend had probably died flying the position the Vick crew should have flown that afternoon. He was equally amazed that even under the best of atmospheric conditions, a voice transmission could carry so far.

Birth: Jan. 4, 1920

Death: Jan. 8, 1944
Kendari
Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia
Father's name was George Harold Mulhollen 1891-1982. Never married. Lt Mulhollen was based in Fenron, Australia and flew a B-24, serial #42-73115, built by Consolidated in San Diego. It was a model J-15-CO. This aircraft was built on 09/01/1943 and arrived overseas on 10/21/1943. It was assigned to the 380/530th. In Dec 1943 new B-24-J models replaced older, fatigued B-24D Liberator aircraft. The new planes were assigned crews (including one to Lt Mulhollen) and in Dec the 380th BG moved to a base at Dobodura, New Guinea. The base had poor living conditions, continuous rains, poor sanitation leading to diarrhea outbreaks, yet crews flew twice per day over a period of 16 days..An unusual event happened on 26 Dec 1943 over Umboi Island (also named Rooke or Siassi), a volcanic island between the mainland of Papua New Guinea and the island of New Britain. Lt Mulhollen was flying #42-41214 and nearly avoided a collision with another B-24. This sent the plane into a left-hand spin from which Lt Mulhollan barely recovered. After he was assigned his own crew on one of the new B-24-J aircraft, he was flying the first mission in the new plane when shot down by enemy fighters on 8 Jan1944 off Wowoni Island, Celebes. This mission was a daylight mission to Kendari. On the run-in to the target 13 Zekes attacked our formation concentrating on the 530th Flight Leader whose plane quickly lost two engines on one side making it virtually unflyable, This plane, 42-73115, crashed on Wowoni Island with the loss of all its crew. One other plane lost an engine but made it back to base. Lt Mulhollen was the aircraft commander for crew #59. The target for the mission was Kendari Island, the capital of the Indonesian province of Southeast Sulawesi. Kendari was an important objective of the Japanese in World War II because of the nearby Allied airfield, which could be used to interdict the sea lanes between Australia and the Dutch East Indies and to bomb Dutch bases on Java and other Islands. The garrison of Kendari was surprised by a Japanese landing on the night of 23-24 January 1942 and put up little resistance before Kendari and the intact airfield were captured.[8]. In the night of 23-24 January 1942 soldiers and officers of the Japanese Sasebo Combined Special Naval Landing Force went ashore north of Kendari. They soon (a couple of hours later) reached their main objective - the Kendari airfield. The KNIL coast guarding detachment couldn't telephone because the line was down. Everybody on the airfield was panicking and all this made it easy for the Japanese soldiers to capture the airfield. Little resistance was offered and only 2 Japanese soldiers were wounded. Destruction of the Kendari airfield was incomplete. On 24 January 1942 the Japanese Eastern Invasion Force appeared off Kendari. An American seaplane tender Childs (built in 1920; main armament: 2 x 10.2cm (4in) guns)), upon leaving Kendari harbour, spotted the Japanese. A rain squall obscured the seaplane tender Childs for a while, allowing her to avoid two Japanese destroyers. Then she was attacked by six Japanese planes at 0800 but it was not hit and escaped to the south. By the evening of 24 January 1942 Kendari was fully occupied. Most of the Dutch KNIL troops officered by KNIL Army Captain F.B. van Straalen were captured by the Japanese, some fought a guerilla war for a short period, while others tried to escape to safer parts of the archipelago. Kendari Air Base was considered the best in the Dutch East Indies and was immediately put into operation by the Japanese 21st Air Flotilla. Almost two years later, in January 1944, Lt Mulhollen and his crew flew their fatal mission enroute to the Japanese airfield on Kendari. Reportedly the crew flew 21 missions together on #42-73115. . One report says his aircraft was hit by Japanese fighters; both engines on the right wing were hit and lost power, causing a fatal impact on a hill on Wowoni Island. Another report simply says the plane crashed and exploded, the crew was never found or heard from, and eye witnesses stated the possibility of men being thrown clear. Another more detailed report says two engines were shot out on the starboard side, the plane went into a flat spin, and crashed into the water near Wowoni Island and exploded - all 10 crew died.
