Note from Inez Adams-Donnigan March 7, 2008 regarding her query as to the death date of Carnell McRee-Snow.
Now I will tell you why I wanted to know the date of Cornell's death.
I remember visiting with Cornell and Eula when I was a young teenager. I believe she was working as a pharmacist in Paris at the time though she lived in Cottage Grove. Anyway, we all liked her. She came up to Tamms for Pop's funeral and to Cairo to visit Mom after Pop had died. Nellie and I drove down to see her several years back, but I don't remember exactly when. We always sent her a Christmas card, but that is all the contact we had.
Cornell was a clown. She had lived in that little town most of her life and she knew everybody and his dog. She wrote poetry about the various people (and dogs) in town. They were hilarious poems.
At Christmas time one year after we had been down there, I sent her a card and got it back marked "deceased". She had seemed so healthy and mentally alert that I just couldn't believe that she was dead. I stewed about it for several months and then I phoned the postmaster in Cottage Grove and asked about her. I thought in a little town of 200 or so people, everybody would know everybody and I could get some information. I wondered whether she had an accident, illness, or what. I got little satisfaction, just that she was "deceased".
I decided that Cornell was not actually dead, but she was just tired of Nellie and me or thought we were trying to horn in on her estate, so she wrote "deceased" on her yearly contact and returned it to us, and the postmaster was in on it too. I thought that would fit in nicely with her sense of humor. She would write a funny poem about it all including the phone call.
I would not have been surprised if your research showed that she was still living today, but that would make her a centurion. I would like to have read the poem she would have written on reaching 100.
